भारतीय संस्कृति को पाखंड और अंधविश्वास से मुक्ति दिलाने के लिए काम करने वाले महर्षि दयानंद सरस्वती का जन्म 12 फरवरी 1824 को मुंबई के मोरवी रियासत के समीप काठियावाड़ा में हुआ था. अब यह क्षेत्र गुजरात में है.

1. दयानंद सरस्वती का असली नाम मूलशंकर था.
2. चौदह साल की उम्र में ही उन्होंने संस्कृत व्याकरण, सामवेद, यजुर्वेद का अध्ययन कर लिया था.
3. 21 साल की उम्र में उन्होंने घर छोड़ दिया और ज्ञान की प्राप्ति में निकल पड़े.
4. दयानंद ने हिंदू धर्म में हो रहे मूर्ति पूजा, बलि प्रथा, बाल विवाह का विरोध किया और 7 अप्रैल 1875 को आर्य समाज की स्थापना की.
5. उन्होंने सभी धर्मों का आलोचनात्मक अध्ययन करते हुए सत्यार्थ प्रकाश में धर्म संबंधित कई प्रश्न उठाए.
6. स्वामी दयानंद ने 'वेदों की ओर लौटो' का नारा दिया.
7. दयानंद सरस्वती ने करीब 60 किताबें लिखी, जिसमें 16 खंडों वाला 'वेदांग प्रकाश' शामिल है. उन्होंने पाणिनि के व्याकरण 'अष्टाध्याय' पर भी अपने विचार लिखे थे लेकिन यह पूरा नहीं हो पाया.
8. इन्होंने धार्मिक और सामाजिक सुधार के अलावा भारत को अंग्रेजों से मुक्त करने के लिए भी काम किया. उन्होंने एक बार लोगों में स्वेदशी भावना को भरते हुए कहा था 'यह समझ लो कि अंग्रेज अपने देश के जूते का भी जितना मान करते हैं, उतना अन्य देश के मनुष्यों का भी नहीं करते.'
9. वे पहले ऐसे व्यक्ति हैं जिन्होंने सबसे पहले स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन में स्वराज्य की मांग की.
10. उनकी मौत 30 अक्टूबर 1883 में हो गई. ऐसा माना जाता है कि उनकी मौत जहर से हुई थी. जोधपुर नरेश जसवंत सिंह के निमंत्रण पर वे वहां गए थे, जहां नन्हीं नाम की वेश्या ने उनके दूध में पिसा हुआ कांच दे दिया, जिसके बाद वे अस्पताल में भर्ती हुए और चिकित्सक ने अंग्रेजी अफसरों से मिलकर उन्हें जहर दे दिया.
